Homebush Bay was once a ship-breaking yard and a number of wrecks still remain, slowly being reclaimed by the mangroves and the water, rusting quietly.


What Once Was – the SS Ayrefield

The SS Ayrfield was a steam collier, brought to Homebush Bay in the early 70’s for breaking she now lays abandoned and grounded in front of Wentworth Point.

Her partly stripped hull has become home to a small mangrove forest.

Hulk of the SS Ayrfield

At night the SS Ayrefield is lit by floodlights from the shore and set against the blaze of light that is the suburb of Rhodes.
